Antidiarrheal / Opioid Receptor Agonist (Peripheral)โœ“ Over-the-counter

What Is Loperamide (Imodium) Used For?

Brand names: Imodium, Imodium A-D

Loperamide is an OTC antidiarrheal medication that slows intestinal movement to reduce diarrhea. It works peripherally and does not cross into the brain at normal doses.

What is Loperamide used for?

  • Acute diarrhea (traveller's diarrhea, food-related)
  • Chronic diarrhea associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBS, Crohn's)
  • Reducing output from ileostomies

How does Loperamide work?

Loperamide activates opioid receptors in the gut wall, slowing intestinal contractions and reducing fluid and electrolyte secretion into the intestine. It doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier at normal doses so has no narcotic effects.

Frequently asked questions

What is loperamide (Imodium) used for?

Loperamide is used to treat acute diarrhea including traveller's diarrhea and food-related diarrhea. It slows gut movement to reduce frequency and urgency.

When should I NOT take loperamide?

Do not take loperamide if you have bloody diarrhea, fever, or signs of bacterial infection โ€” slowing the gut can keep infectious bacteria inside longer and worsen the infection. Seek medical care instead.

How quickly does loperamide work?

Loperamide typically begins working within 1 hour. Significant relief from acute diarrhea is usually felt within 2โ€“4 hours of the first dose.

Is loperamide safe for children?

Not recommended for children under 2. Children 2โ€“5 should use only the liquid formulation at weight-based doses. Always use children's specific products and dosing instructions.

Can I take loperamide for IBS?

Yes โ€” loperamide is frequently used for diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D) to reduce urgency and frequency. It should be taken at the lowest effective dose, usually before meals or situations likely to trigger diarrhea.
